about

Morgan’s March- (G DGBD) This old tune is rarely heard outside of my region. However, thanks to George Gibson, the tune is experiencing resurgence among my generation of Kentucky musicians. George learned the tune indirectly from Samp Combs. The story goes that Samp hid his horses and cattle when General John Hunt Morgan was raiding Letcher County during the Civil War. He forgot to hide his fiddle, which Morgan’s raiders stole. According to Samp, when he snuck up to the raider’s campfire hoping to recover the fiddle, General Morgan was standing by the campfire fiddling this tune. Samp never got his fiddle back, but he did remember the tune, which he called Morgan’s March
