Old Bangum- (G CGCC) This is an old Child ballad (#18) that I learned from a recording of Jean Ritchie of Perry County. My dad helped Jean’s family locate her grandfather Ault Ritchie’s gravesite. He fought along side my ancestor John S. Sparkman in the Civil War. As a result of my father’s efforts, I was able to correspond with Jean, whom I’m honored to know. Justus Begley, a banjo player from Hazard had a distinctive shuffle in his down stroke. I tried to incorporate some of his technique in this tune. The George Gibson Darling Cora tuning was used for this ballad.
