Boris Pasternak
In Holy Week
English Translation:
The night’s darkness is still everywhere.
And still so early in the world,
Innumerable stars appear
And each so bright in the night sky
That if the earth could count them,
It would sleep through Pascha,
Lulled by chanted psalm and chanted prayer.
Still darkness, darkness everywhere.
The world has only just begun
The village road lies in eternity,
From crossing to corner,
And there is still a thousand years
Until dawn and warmth of sun.
The earth is still naked,
And at night there is nothing to clothe her
Where she can gently rock the bells,
And echo the choir freely.
And from Holy Thursday
Until Holy Saturday
Water burrows the shores.
And creates waterfalls.
The forest is naked and uncovered,
Enduring Christ’s passion,
There stands a congregation
Of silent pines at prayer.
In the village, in a small space,
As if in a gathering,
The trees look from their nakedness.
Into the church lattice.
There looks are full of terror.
Their fear is indescribable.
The gardens march out from their fences,
All of nature trembles:
They bury God.
And they see light at the Holy gates,
Low candles that illuminate
Black robes and tear-streamed cheeks,
The crowd that now emerging, elevates
Christ’s cross and death shroud,
And birches at the outer gates
Make way for them and bow.
The procession makes the rounds
Of the old church bounds
And brings back from the pavement
A babble of spring sounds,
Smoked air tasting of the sacrament
And smelling of the ground.
And March throws snow
To the crowd of individuals on the parapet,
As if a man came out,
And brought out, and opened the ark,
And gave everything he had away.
And singing lasts until the dawn,
When, having wept to their hearts’ content,
Gospel and psalm, all passion spent,
More quietly retreat
Along the lamplit street.
But at midnight, fur and flesh will hold their breath
Having heard Springs message
That wind and weather change direction,
And death may then be put to death
By the power of Resurrection.
