about

Spring of ’65- There are differences in opinion about the origin of this song. However, there is no doubt that in Kentucky it was sung from the perspective of soldiers returning home in 1865 at the close of the Civil War. As a young boy, I remember my father having a conversation with an old man in Knott County. He asked him when a particular house was built. The man replied, “it was built in the spring of the surrender.” I learned this beautiful rendition from a recording of James D. Cornett of Mason’s Creek, Kentucky.
